I approach health and my life in a holistic way. What does that mean exactly? It's not as scary as it sounds! To me it means that I view my body, my emotions, my physical and internal well being as a whole. I think taking care of myself mentally, physically and emotionally are all vital to my overall health. I believe if we just focus on our fitness but avoid our internal (or mental) health then we will never achieve our true greatness. I believe if we decide to rely on a weight loss pill but we don't work on the underlying issue of why we are overweight to begin with our results won't be lasting. When we focus on our internal happiness just as much as our physical fitness great things can happen.
In the past 6 months or so I've taken my health to a new level. I began to learn more about chemicals, fragrance and all the bad things they bring into our homes. This image below is from Hol:Fit and I love how it describes the chemicals we are around every day.
Every day we are exposed to chemicals from our makeup, perfume, cleaning products, candles, dish soap, lotions personal care products and more. It can seem overwhelming but I have some simple ways to go chemical free. First lets touch on what these chemicals are doing to us and what ingredients we want to be aware of.
What in the heck are these chemicals doing to my body!?
Note: Your liver naturally detoxes toxins out of your body daily, when you are not feeding it nutritious foods, it has to work harder, resulting in fat cells storing toxins opposed to them being excreted
What are the 'hidden' names of chemicals?
When I first began looking at chemicals in products I just focused on the words fragrance and perfume, These two words are used to cover up thousands of chemicals (that have proven to be toxic) that the companies don't have to list on their ingredients. So, if you are new to all of this and just starting out I recommend looking for those two terms and avoiding them. The chemicals found in fragrance and/or perfume have been known to be cancer causing and also effect your hormones and your central nervous system.
Some additional names that you might want to be on the look out for are:
These are 3 hormone disrupting chemicals that can be cancer causing. They are usually found in shampoo, soaps and facial cleansers.
PARABENS AND PHTHALATES
These have both been banned in Europe but not here in the US. You typically find these in your cosmetics, food preservatives and self care products. These are particularly linked to breast cancer.
Make your own products!
The best advice I have is to make your own products or buy from companies you can trust. If I i am buying a product some companies I have learned to love and trust are
-The Honest Company
I have replaced most of every thing with homemade products using mostly essential oils.
Here are some of my favorite recipes and things I use on a daily or weekly basis.
*You can also purchase pure essential oils through mydoterra.com/iamwellstudio
these are CPTG certified pure and therapeutic grade.
*Orchard nutrition also carries different options on oils. Be sure to choose Organic when possible and avoid any additives.
*One bottle of oil could last you years. I bought my bottle of peppermint last November and it's still half way full. A little goes a long ways!
