If I had one secret to success it would be the word internal. If there was one thing I could tell you to focus on that would make your lifestyle change happen, last and be successful for the long haul, internal would be the word of choice.
What the heck am I talking about? Well, for years I had my own lifestyle struggle. I was 40 pounds heavier than I am now, trying every diet that I could think of and struggling with a major eating disorder and body image issues. All I wanted to do was lose weight and I thought I was a failure because I couldn’t do it (and keep it off). I would make myself a list of what I was going to focus on for the next month. Gym 6 days a week and a strict meal plan. If I burned x amount of calories at the gym I could lose x amount of weight in a month. I would be at the gym 3x a day in some cases, wearing my heart rate monitor, making sure I’m burning enough calories. The plan made perfect sense, but I failed every time. Sometimes it took me a week, sometimes a day, sometimes within a few hours. It was a constant battle I was in for years.
Eventually, something clicked. Now looking back it’s all so obvious to me, but until I learned it (and really bought into it) I was in a constant circle of failure. Eventually I shifted my focus to my internal well being. And this wasn’t an overnight decision, it was something I had to remind myself of and really work towards breaking a 10+ year habit. I decided I was going to stop worrying about the weight, stop worrying about the calories, stop worrying how I looked and the external results. Instead I started worrying about me. My internal well being. How to make myself happy. Finding the things I looked forward to on a daily basis. I took a break from the gym, allowed myself to eat whatever I wanted with no restrictions or rules and slowly my life began to change.
Our external results are an internal job. You could lose 10,20 or even 50 pounds and none of it would matter if our internal well being wasn’t being taken care of. Change the way you view things. Change the main focus on this journey that you’re on. Think about it in the long haul. What happens when you do lose all that weight? What will your reasons be than for eating healthy and being active? It’s a decision that has to last a lifetime.
Try some of these new thought patterns and ways to view this journey. This was a game changer for me and I hope it will be for you too!
