I see it every year, challenge groups, gyms and people all over that think they need to cleanse after their Thanksgiving feast. I see headlines like "Avoid weight gain this holiday season" "Don't be a turkey, get your workouts in", "Join me for my 3 days juice cleanse the Monday after Thanksgiving." The silver platter that hand delivers eating disorders and body image issues to the American people.
Have you ever had a stress free Holiday season where you were excited that your family was coming to visit for a long weekend? Were you ever excited about family football in the front yard and yummy food that followed after? What about the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade, were you excited about that?
Think back to when that shift changed. When did you start stressing more about all the calories you were going to eat? When did you start saying i'll just blow it Thursday through Sunday and than restrict myself Monday to lose all the weight? Surely it wasn't when you were a child and all you cared about was family, happiness and the excitement of the Holidays.
I so badly want to get people back to that. I so badly want to shift this idea that Holidays and family gatherings are a scary thing. For years I stressed about food. I made sure I got as many workouts possible in the week leading to Thanksgiving. I strived for perfection. Thanksgiving day I would keep restricting until one cookie would wreck my world and it would all be over. It doesn't have to be like that.
The funny thing about that cycle is that it's doing more bad than good (like, a lot more bad). If we went back to our childhood ways and just enjoyed the good food and family time we would be avoiding a lot of stress, bad feelings and (sadly) self hate. So, this Thanksgiving say no to any groups, gyms or diet plans that make you "avoid holiday weight gain". You don't need to cleanse, you don't need to step on the scale to see how much weight you gained (It's water weight, use the restroom and you'll go back to normal), just enjoy your family, enjoy the treats, enjoy the Football and be THANKFUL for all you have. I've said this before but I hope when i'm 80 years old I'm not worried about calories, weight gain and the juice cleanse in my future.
I challenge you to get cozy at some point today, grab a cup of tea and make a list of all the things you are Thankful for. Add to that list all of your favorite holiday memories and/or traditions you want to start. Make this holiday about family, friends and good memories.
Maybe i'll see you in the studio this week, maybe your busy going on walks with your family or playing tag with your nieces and nephews. Whatever you are doing, it is enough, you are enough and you are one awesome, beautiful, talented woman...Don't forget it!
