I approach health 100% differently than I did 3 years ago. I'm always learning and always growing. If my old self saw me today I would probably laugh and call myself a hippie. 3 years ago I was all about hitting the gym hard, getting in my protein shakes and living under the rule "no pain no gain". NOW, i'm all about eating plant based, using essential oils for everything , practicing yoga/meditation and always working on self love (woohoo!)
Times are changing and although there are still quick fix programs and diets that people are buying into, I see a lot more open minded people looking for alternative ways to reach their goals. In my mind, I believe that our mind, body, emotions, physical appearance and lifestyle are all one. I think it's silly to focus on a meal plan or a workout regimen if we refuse to focus on our internal well being. I think it's pointless to come to class every day to workout if we're ignoring that fact that we still speak negatively to ourselves every day. It is up to us to view our body as a whole and to approach our health that way.
Starting a business has been a major blessing. It has also caused me to lose countless hours of sleep, stress, gain weight, breakout, cry, become a psycho at times and question what the hell am I doing over and over and over again. In this past year (and last few months especially) I have had to really dig deep and find a holistic way to care for myself. I tried yoga, I tried different ways of eating, I tried just relaxing (which is not easy to do), I tried everything I could to get myself back on track EXCEPT taking time for myself and not feeling any shame in it.
In my mind, just like in many of yours, I thought if I stopped working, my business (or family) would fail. I was guilty if it was the middle of the day and I was doing something for myself. I was very easily working 14+ hours a day....and losing my mind.
These changes that I made didn't happen all at once. I've been implementing them into my life for the past 6 months. Sometimes i'm good at them, sometimes I slip back into my old ways, but they are turning into habits. The days I spend less hours working are the days I get the most done (crazy right?). The days that i'm stressed and a case of emotions are not very productive and my poor husband probably avoids me at all costs.
Below are some things that I do most days and that have allowed me to feel the healthiest I have yet.
1. Phone off in the evening
Its a curse and a blessing having a smart phone. I use to charge my phone next to my bed and it would light up every time I would get a message or email. I would be up at 2 in the morning replying to clients. Now, when I get home from my evening class (7 pm) I turn my phone off and I charge it outside of my bedroom. I don't turn it on until the morning. I'm working towards keeping it off in the morning as well but that's in the works.
I've noticed my husband and I connect a TON more in the evening now, i'm more relaxed and I sleep wonderfully.
2. Adding in some extra greens
I'm not a huge smoothie person usually but eating plant based you have to WORK at getting enough veggies in. You don't get to be lazy and eat packaged food all day. You have to plan and prepare. I started adding in a giant green smoothie every day. I'll sip on half in the a.m and half in the p.m. It gives me a little something extra and helps me make better choices overall.
3. Less coffee more water with lemon
I was having coffee in the morning, afternoon and sometimes evening (yikes). There are benefits to organic coffee in moderation. Now I enjoy my morning cup of joe with some almond milk and than sip on water the rest of the day.
4.Essential oils all day
I have learned to love essential oils. I diffuse them regularly in my house. I diffuse lavender as I fall asleep at night and it makes a relaxing atmosphere in our bedroom. I also put peppermint on an upset stomach (cramps) or on my temples for headache relief.
There are so many uses for different essential oils and they have become part of my daily routine.
5.Plan your day (in a manageable way)
I am the queen of making lists. I will make lists for different lists! It can get out of control. So, every day I set a goal of 3-4 things I want to accomplish and I stick to that. I find when you have too much to do and no direction nothing gets done! I also have specific days for certain things. For example, Tuesdays are for blogging!
6. Practice positive self talk
This is something you have no excuse not to do. Start paying attention to how you speak to yourself. What are your thoughts when you walk by a mirror? What about when you get ready in the morning? Mine were starting to become negative so I quickly began saying i am beautiful every time a negative thought came in. Consistency is the key so start now.
7. Get natural
I got rid of all the chemicals in my beauty products (perfumes, lotions, etc), cleaning products and house hold products. I use coconut oil and essential oils for lotion/ perfumes, I use essential oils and vinegar for cleaning and purchase different things from brands I can trust. I choose organic foods and steer clear from things that have long ingredient lists. It has been a process but one that makes a huge difference.
8. Get moving
So, I do own a wellness studio which makes it easy to get some movement in. With that being said it doesn't mean that I just get to workout all day. During classes I'm directing, counting, encouraging, etc. I now make a point to do some sort of activity daily. That might be a slow walk, it might be 20 minutes of yoga, it might be stretching. I pretty much leave it up to my body to let me know what I want to do that day!
